Dr. Hayes' classic saying is when learning about how the frequency (nu or v) and wavelength (lambda or L) of light are related.  Show off your knowledge of math, physics, and chemistry.   Energy doesn't transfer unless the frequencies match.  The equation is:  speed of light = L* v.   Rearrange to get v = c/L.   It's all about the vibrational energy...or the Hertz!  So, when I ask my students, "what's nu?",  they respond "c over lambda".
